Message On most newer cars, they won't let you rev it very high when you're not in gear. They'll let you rev to redline while in gear, but only to 2500-3000 rpm when not in gear.

I don't know why they felt the need to do that, but they went out of their way to do it.

I've heard that when there's no load on the engine keeping the tolerances tight on the parts, revving it high is a bad idea.
